BRITE accepts and appreiates donations, but its tax-exempt status does not allow those donations to be tax-deductible in the way donations are to 501(c)(3) non-profits. BRITE's annual budget is small, but necessary to provide services and outreach to the community. As BRITE looks to expand its portfolio of projects, finances are the a signficant limiting factor. For instance, being able to provide a small fund for surveillance cameras in areas with persistent quality of life issues is something BRITE would like to do. BRITE's tax status is more the result of a lack of skill in navigating the complexities of our tax code than a desire to have this tax designation. If there is a savvy CPA or tax attorney who would be willing to help BRITE transition to a 501(c)(3) organization, that would be desirable.
